How Do I Love Thee?
The poem, “How Do I Love Thee” by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, is a very well known poem. The main topic of this poem is that the narrator loves the person she is talking about with such passion and enthusiasm that at times it seems surreal. Everybody loves at east something or someone as much as the narrator of this poem loves ‘thee’ but people sometimes just simply don’t express themselves the way this poem does. People can express their emotion in many different ways, but this poem expresses the narrator’s emotions and feelings wonderfully.
What makes this poem great to me is the way the narrator speaks about ‘thee’ or ‘you’ with such passion and significance. There are many things that make this poem ’great’ and my opinions may be different than those of others. The amount of love and worship the narrator shows ‘thee’ is something that takes a lot of courage and bravery to represent in poetry, because showing someone how much you care about them can be very hard, and this poem is great to express the way you can love someone.
Another reason that I think makes this poem great is that I can relate to it. I can relate to it in such a way, that it is as if the narrator just stole the words out of my mouth. The way I feel about some of my friends, and family members and my horse are exactly the same as what the poem means and says. The poem says that she(the narrator) can love him (thee) to any extent, all the time, as freely and purely as men strive for the Right, she loves him as honestly as a child is open and honest, she loves him like children love toys, she loves him with such passion that she could endure anything. She also loves him with everything she seems and thinks she has lost.
All in all, this poem is a form of literature and art that has a very deep and meaningful connotation. The words that are used are very powerful and it is about one of the most commonly known emotions to mankind, and even to animals and such things. Love is one of the deepest and most sacred sentiments that a person could feel and own, and I think it is very important that it is acknowledged and that it is represented to children and adults throughout their entire life, because I believe that without love, a human cannot be happy.

A nice start. I appreciate how you analyze the poem through the lens of your personal life. Relating to literature is so important.
ReplyDeleteTo work on: In the future, when you give an opinion, or in this case a "reason" the poem is "great," make sure you support that opinion with a specific quote--a phrase, a stanza--from the poem. Without that, the reader has no way to know if what you say is true.
